When guppy colour fades, it’s tempting to assume genetics suddenly “failed.” In reality, most colour loss is caused by environment: stress, poor nutrition, unstable water, or inappropriate lighting. Many of these causes are reversible. Guppies often regain colour once conditions improve, especially if they are otherwise healthy and young. The key is identifying the most likely cause in your specific tank rather than changing everything at once.

1) Stress from chasing or bullying

Constant chasing keeps fish in a stressed state, and colour dulls. Fixing ratios and adding cover can make a big difference.

2) Water instability

Even if your numbers are “okay,” swings in temperature or pH can reduce colour. Stability often brings colour back.

3) Poor diet (or lack of variety)

Colour and finnage rely on consistent nutrition. A stable staple diet plus occasional quality extras helps.

4) High nitrates and organic load

Water that looks clear can still be “heavy.” If nitrates rise quickly, guppies often dull.

5) Lighting mismatch

Some lighting makes fish look washed out. But more importantly, too much light can increase stress and algae issues.

6) Recovery after shipping or illness

Colour can fade after shipping stress. Most fish regain colour after a calm first week and stable water.

If your guppy’s appetite is good and behaviour is normal, colour fading is often fixable with simple stability improvements. Fix one factor at a time, give it a week, and you’ll usually see colour return.
